Dr Martin Gibson

Head of Environmental Assurance

Martin is a passionate believer that the best things for the environment and the best things for business go hand in hand.  He has been one of the leading exponents of helping businesses to recognise that good environmental practice not only brings business cost savings but also improves staff and customer engagement.

Martin has been an advocate of using environmental issues to improve business for many years.  After completing his Ph.D.  in botany and aquatic chemistry, Martin did applied research into controlling plant growth in waterways.  He then moved into consultancy, initially in the water industry where he undertook some of the first environmental impact assessments in the UK.  He also undertook catchment management planning in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Since the early 1990s, Martin has been at the forefront of helping companies to reduce costs through improved environmental practices. Whilst Director of the Government’s Envirowise program, he helped companies to save over £1 billion pounds, some of which was due to improved technologies but most was from improved management practices and operational behaviours.  For over a decade, Martin has been a leading spokesperson and resource efficiency, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Martin’s career has brought him into contact with businesses from almost every sector. He has worked closely on helping businesses to understand and implement environmental legislation cost effectively.  He has also helped companies to understand how sustainability affects their business and can be used to drive long-term strategy. He developed many of the practices of the Envirowise programme for the manufacturing and service sectors and has helped drive energy efficiency and sustainability in the built environment, he is also a qualified BREEAM International assessor and prior to joining Speedy worked as head of client engagement at the Carbon Trust.
