Women in Construction Week

Currently, around 15% of the UK construction workforce are women, 340,000 individuals in total, according to the ONS. This is the highest at any time since records began.

However, only around 2% of women in construction work in on-site roles. 7% of line executive roles are women, and only 9.2% of the highest-paid roles within the industry belong to women.

Getting more women into hire and construction has historically been challenging. But, perceptions are changing, enabling women to develop careers within construction and similar industries.

Women In Construction Week celebrates and promotes the role of women in the construction industry. This year's theme, 'Together we Rise', celebrates the strength and knowledge of women and the vital role they play in shaping the future of the construction industry.

Between March 2-8th 2025, a full calendar of events is taking place designed to inspire, educate, and support the Women in Construction community.

How Speedy Hire are Leading the Way

Speedy Hire has a target of 30% of our workforce being women by 2030. We also have a target of 100% of our people trained in DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) by 2025.

As of the end of 2024, 22% of our workforce is female, and 95% were trained in DEI.

At Speedy Hire we promote DEI at all levels of our business, to better equip our company for the future and support social mobility by providing fair opportunities for people from all backgrounds.

Speedy Hire has adopted the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles (UN WEP) and is one of 197 UK signatories of the UN Global Compact to have completed the nine-month Target Gender Equality programme.

Since becoming a signatory, our gender score has more than tripled. We seek to embed our DEI values through our supply chain and prioritise working with MSMEs (‘Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises’), VCSEs (‘Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprises’) and female and ethnic minority-owned businesses, where appropriate.

We regularly collaborate with organisations such as Women in Construction and Engineering. Our People Like Us (‘PLUS’) gender affinity group continues to thrive, supporting the delivery of our social value objectives concerning gender balance.
