With Christmas nearly here, December is a busy time for us all. With all the activities going on, have you remembered to get your spare room ready to welcome your Christmas guests this year?
If not don’t worry--there is still plenty of time. Avoid the mad dash to get all your jobs done and read our tips on how to get your guest bedroom ready for the festive season and make your guests feel extra special this Christmas time without blowing your Christmas budget.
Ideas to get your Spare Room ready for Christmas Guests
Idea 1: Declutter the guest room
Is your spare room used as a storage space for all those summer clothes now packed away ready for next year, or unwanted items you just don’t know what to do with? Preparing for guests is a great time for decluttering and sorting out any items you no longer need, or you don’t want your guests to see. Why not donate any unwanted clothing and items to your local charity shop or the Salvation Army?
Use vacuum bags for clothing which needs to be stored, and ensure your guests have some space in the wardrobe or drawers so they can hang their clothes.
Idea 2: Deep clean carpets
Deep clean your guest bedroom carpet and remove any stains or dirt to get your carpet looking as good as new again. Use a carpet cleaner for a more professional finish, to get your carpets clean and ready for your guest to arrive in style. For additional comfort why not add a fluffy rug too, ready for your guests to put their Christmas slippers on?

Idea 3: Stay connected
Staying in touch with family and friends at Christmas time is important. If you have broadband at home, your guests will need your Wi-Fi code. Why not write the code in a Christmas Card for that special welcoming touch upon their arrival - be the host with the most!
Idea 4: Refresh bedroom walls
It can be hard to nod off in a room or home which is unfamiliar. So, your guest bedroom should be filled with neutral colours to promote relaxation. Don't make it too busy.
Use a paint sprayer to save you time and provide you with a smooth and even finish, leaving you more time to bake those Christmas cookies and get those party outfits ready. Finish off the room with cushions, warm blankets, and really simple decor which is easy to clean.
Don't go crazy with clutter such as vases and ornaments. This is just a bed for dust, and you want to give yourself one less job, not more.
For extra help watch our how to use a paint sprayer video.
Idea 5: Twinkle with fairy lights
Adding some fairy lights to your guest bedroom will create a subtle glowing effect. It also helps to feel nice and festive and cosy on dark nights. You don't want lights that are too bright and can affect sleep, so opt for warm hues.
If your guest likes reading or watching TV before bed, be sure to include a bedside lamp in the room too.
Idea 6: New wallpaper design
If your spare room has wallpaper, is it in need of a bit of an update? Save time and remove old wallpaper with a wallpaper stripper, then replace it with a fabulous new wallpaper design to wow your guests this Christmas.
If you have never used a wallpaper stripper before please watch our how to use a wallpaper stripper video.
Idea 7: Christmas Eve Box
Create a Christmas Eve Box and fill it up with some festive goodies for your guests to enjoy such as homemade cookies, cupcakes, fluffy pyjamas, bed socks, shower and bath treats, and a book. Check they have everything they need, and be sure to include toothbrushes, towels, and other hygiene and pamper products if they have had far to travel or have forgotten items.
Idea 8: Keep guests warm
Keeping your guests warm and heating up your home at Christmas using smaller heating solutions can be more cost-efficient than turning on your central heating all the time. There are lots of different heating options available to keep your guests warm this Christmas time.
Portable heating in the spare room can also mean they can control it to their own preference, so if they like to be really warm and cosy they can turn it on. Some people prefer to have their bedroom really cold, so they can keep the room cooler if you want to heat the rest of the house in the morning.
Idea 9: Check the mattress
A bad mattress = a bad night's sleep. You won't necessarily know your spare mattress is lumpy and bumpy as you won't be sleeping on it. So, if you want to spend a night in your guest's shoes, try it out beforehand. There is no need to buy a new mattress if you don't think it is up to scratch, though.
A mattress topper can be a cheap yet effective way to take your spare bed from drab to fab. They won't be able to feel any lumps and bumps, and you don't have to fork out to buy an item which is barely used.
Idea 10: Steam clean the furnishings
The duvet and pillows are rarely used, but this doesn't mean they smell fresh. Washing them in the machine can be risky, so instead, hire a steam cleaner. This will help them to smell fresh, and also help tackle any bacteria or germs in the fibres.
Also use it on the mattress, which will help kill any bedbugs or other pests. Steam under the bed, too, and then ensure your bedding is clean and dry before making up the bed.
Speedy Tip: Keep materials and sharp tools out of children’s / animals' reach, wear correct safety PPE equipment and remember to always check the operators and safety guidance before using any hire equipment.
