IPAF Categories Guide
IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation. This is the official accrediting body dedicated to promoting the safe, effective use of powered access equipment.
So, anyone undertaking powered access training should complete an IPAF-accredited course. Speedy Hire offers a range of IPAF courses, carried out at one of our dedicated sites across the UK.
Types of IPAF Categories
There are various forms of powered access equipment available to use in the workplace depending on your needs. Training should relate to the category you’re required to use in your role.
IPAF 1a
Category 1a covers Static Vertical lifts or vertical personnel platforms. Static means stationary while in use.
Static Vertical Platforms (1a) are smaller access machines which are moved into position before the platform is elevated. These can only be operated when stationary.
Before being used, outriggers must be deployed, so they cannot be driven while the platform is in the air.
While Speedy Hire has no 1a platforms in our fleet, a limited number of instructors can train clients on their own site using their machines.
IPAF 1b
Category 1b relates to static boom lifts, self-propelled booms (outriggers), and spiders.
So while many of these are used on a mobile vehicle, such as a lorry-mounted, van-mounted, or trailer-mounted push-around, they are still themselves classed as static.

IPAF 3a
IPAF 3a gives attendees an understanding how to operate Mobile Vertical lifting platforms, such as scissor lifts. These machines can be driven while the platform is in the air.

IPAF 3b
3b focuses on telescopic or articulated MEWPs. These are often self-propelled Mobile Booms driven and positioned from the platform.
3a and 3b courses are separate to allow a complete understanding of using both machine types, so users may need to complete both courses individually or as a training plan.
IPAF Dual Category 3a and 3b
IPAF 3a and 3b training can be combined with Speedy Hire's dedicated Dual Category 3a and 3b training course, allowing the safe operation of powered access equipment.
This would cover all the equipment covered separately with individual 3a and 3b courses, including scissor lifts, vertical personnel platforms (mobile), and self-propelled booms. This gives participants a good broad understanding and grasp of a range of MEWPs, meaning the correct equipment can be used for the job at hand.
What does IPAF training cover?
During a IPAF training course, you will receive basic training relating to health and safety considerations and obligations, accident prevention, and practical training on operating a MEWP in the workplace.
A mix of theory classes and practical assessments will be involved.
Obtaining an IPAF licence is a vital certification for professionals operating MEWPs in various industries. To ensure that you get the most out of your training, book your IPAF training course with Speedy Hire your trusted provider.
