What is IPAF Training?

IPAF is an acronym for the International Powered Access Federation, a not-for-profit organisation that supports the safe and effective use of MEWPs.

MEWPs include cherry pickers, scissor lifts and boom lifts. IPAF training courses are for anyone who wants to work at height using one of these or in a workplace that uses them.

IPAF-accredited training providers can train individuals on how to safely use this equipment, and after successful completion, individuals will receive a Powered Access License or PAL card.

IPAF Training from Speedy

What does IPAF training cover?

Several different IPAF training courses are available, all covering slightly different topics. So, the one you need to take depends on your needs.

Training courses will cover a mix of theoretical and practical material, as well as theory and practical tests. The theory can be done online or via e-learning, but the practical will be at a registered test centre.

IPAF categories offered by Speedy are:

  • IPAF Single Category
  • IPAF Dual Category – Any combination of categories
  • IPAF Triple Category – 1b, 3a, 3b
  • IPAF Load/Unload – For anyone loading & unloading heavy plant machinery
  • IPAF Harness (Fall Protection) – Ensures operators are aware of how to use and inspect harnesses and other fall arrest equipment
  • IPAF User
  • IPAF Inspection
  • IPAF PAL+ - For attendees working in challenging environments
  • IPAF MEWPs for Managers – Training for managers working in environments with MEWPS
  • IPAF MEWPS for Managers (eLearning)
  • IPAF Site Assessment (for MEWP Selection) Training Course – Choosing the correct MEWP for your needs
  • IPAF PAV – for Push Around Verticals

Which IPAF course do I need?

This depends on the equipment you use at work in your role. You aren't limited to taking just one course if you need to improve your skills and knowledge!

Triple Category will give you the most breadth and range of equipment, but it is worth talking to management or health and safety at your workplace to establish the best option for your needs and the business.

You can read our full guide on the different categories and training courses for more information.

What does 'IPAF PAL+' mean?

You may see a training course with a '+' at the end, such as 3b+. IPAF PAL+ means that the trainer has completed an additional PAL+ course. This covers training and testing for the category indicated.

IPAF PAL+ is a more extensive training session that gives attendees a more comprehensive understanding of IPAF and can cover use under challenging circumstances.

Usually, the trainer has completed additional training and operation in challenging environments. While optional, IPAF+ is also recommended for anyone working in challenging environments with higher injury risk.

A valid in-date operator card is required for PAL+ training.

What is the difference between IPAF and PASMA?

IPAF is the accrediting body for powered access equipment. PASMA is the accrediting body for mobile scaffold towers.

You can read more about PASMA courses here.

What is a PAL card?

A PAL card is a Powered Access License. It is an internationally recognised certification, accepted by employers or health and safety officers, to show you have the correct training to work at height and use MEWPs.

From 2021, IPAF licenses, logbooks, and safety guides have been issued digitally through the IPAF ePAL app rather than as a physical version.

The ePAL app is secure, convenient, fraud-smart, and transportable across sites and jobs.

How long does IPAF training last?

The training course can take between half a day to three days, depending on its contents. If training through Speedy Hire, all of our courses give an overview of the duration and the certification's length once completed.

A PAL card is valid for 5 years, and cards can be renewed before the expiry date, so there is a continuation.

To renew PAL licenses, a half-day renewal course is required. The attendee needs an up-to-date log book with at least 60 entries, 10 of which were logged in the last 12 months.

A few courses, such as the MEWP Selection courses that don't involve practical assessments, can last a lifetime.

Is IPAF a legal requirement?

There's no specific legal requirement for IPAF training or certification. However, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 state that all employers should ensure that anyone working at height is competent and has been trained by a qualified person.

A PAL card, received after completing an IPAF course, is an internationally recognised certification. So, it is the best form of training to undertake.
