What to do in the garden in June

The end of June is seen as the start of summer, with the nicer weather meaning we can finally have barbecues and enjoy our gardens in full bloom.

June 21st is also the longest day of the year, so we need to make the most of the longer nights.

Hopefully, your garden will now be able to be enjoyed right up until around September or October—if you keep on top of it.

While there’s less to do now than when you were preparing your garden for summer so far, it is still important to ensure everything remains in good condition.

Here at Speedy, we have all the gardening tools you’d need to get the job done, available to hire online and in our local service centres.

When carrying out any gardening, wear eye protection, thick gloves, and heavy work boots. Wear ear protection if using loud tools. Any PPE you require can be bought from Speedy.

  1. Be water wise

Plants and grass will all need to be watered during the warmer weather, to keep them blooming and in good condition.

But you don’t want to waste water—it’s a valuable resource, and there are often shortages over the summer. Hopefully, you’ve stored some from winter in a water butt (if not, get one ready before the rain starts).

If not, there are ways to keep your plants hydrated without wasting water. Water in the morning, which is when plants start to wake up and use the water. Failing that, water in the evening when it is cooler so less is lost to evaporation.

Fruit trees, flowering plants, and those with large leaves or lots of leaves will need more water. Potted plants will need more water than those in the borders. You can also use water beads in the soil to hold more water or slow drip mechanisms rather than manual watering.

  1. Keep the lawn in good condition

You should be mowing the lawn every week or so. Never remove more than one-third of the height and keep it at a few centimetres tall so it remains thick and looks in good condition.

You might have to keep it watered with a hosepipe (if there are no bans in your local area). If you have a large grass area, consider leaving some long so wildlife can take shelter from the heat if needed.

  1. Pinch out plants to promote growth

Pinch out the tips of fuchsias and bedding plants to encourage further strong growth. This can help them become bushier rather than stringy and tall.

Pinch out the side shoots of any tomatoes too. These are the additional leaves which grow between the main stem and the side stems. They just sap the strength from the main plant, so get rid of them.

You also want to deadhead roses and other plants regularly, which will keep everything blooming for longer, as it redirects the energy into buds and new shoots.

  1. Stake tall plants

From roses which need tying and supporting, to sunflowers, hollyhocks, and foxgloves which are growing tall, you need to get some canes and string or gardening wire and tie up the plants to support them.

This will encourage them to grow even taller and will ensure the stems don’t break under the weight or pressure of the flower.

  1. Keep planting out summer bedding plants

Your previous bedding and border plants are probably looking a bit worse for wear now. Remove anything which won’t come up again next year and plant out some summer blooms instead.

Geraniums, lobelia, sweet peas, cosmos, and begonia will all bloom well if you keep them watered. Don’t forget the hanging baskets, either!

June is one of the few months where it is just a matter of keeping your garden ticking over, rather than transforming it. You’ve done so much hard work, so now it's time to enjoy it!
