The team at Speedy’s Birmingham Superstore supported local contractors by supplying them with free of charge products and equipment, to undertake one of the biggest projects of 2018, helping to change the lives of a family from Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.

Featuring on the popular BBC One series ‘DIY SOS’, presented by Nick Knowles, the show follows the completion of challenging renovation projects across the UK. In just 9 days, Knowles and co rely on the support and generosity of local tradespeople and suppliers to carry out the renovation work, helping transform the lives of truly deserving families.

Johanna and partner William live in a small terraced home in Bromsgrove, on the outskirts of Birmingham. Johanna is best friends with her younger sister Karis, who lives in Stourbridge with their mum, but Karis has Cerebral Palsy, uses a wheelchair and is in need of constant care.

Mum Karen is currently Karis’ carer, but her own health has reached a crisis point. The threat of her daughter needing to move into residential care is very real and Karis is terrified of this happening too. Johanna and William are desperate to bring Karis to Bromsgrove permanently, but their house is wholly inaccessible for Karis - the doors and corridors are too narrow for her wheelchair and there is no disability access to the upstairs.

Karis is an incredibly motivated young woman who desperately wants to achieve independence. She blogs about how local music and social venues can encourage wheelchair users, and is a disability campaigner for young people in her area. She adores her mum and it’s breaking her heart seeing Karen struggle with the care that she needs.

Moved by this heart-wrenching situation, Speedy supported the project to help expand and renovate the young couple’s home by suppling local contractors with free of charge products and equipment. Over 250 pieces of equipment were delivered to the Bromsgrove site, including a 1 tonne micro digger, 1.5 tonne excavator and 1 tonne dumper. Lighting and fans were also supplied to ensure workers were safe and comfortable throughout the build.

Brent Evans, Depot Manager at the Speedy Birmingham Superstore, said:

“The West Midlands team jumped at the chance to support this charity! As we would with any customer requirement, we managed this project from start to finish engaging with the contractors and ensuring we delivered on our promise and the customer completed their project as required.”
