The dreams of five amateur darts fanatics have well and truly taken a flight with Speedy Services in Cardiff, after becoming the last group of players to qualify for the UK Open.

The fantastic five triumphed over hundreds of other hopefuls at the last of Speedy’s six nationwide qualifiers for the prestigious tournament in June. Lee Russell, Steve Werrett, Steve Boulton, Jon Farmer and Glen Miller, all produced magnificent performances to book their places at the ‘FA Cup of Darts’ at the Reebok Stadium.

From the initial 15 dart challenge, Lee Russell’s score of 504 topped the charts during a session of high quality in Cardiff, before the top ten scorers took part in a knock-out leg of 701 to determine their fate. Speedy, the UK’s largest equipment rental and services company, has also staged qualifiers in Brighton, Dartford, Inverness Leeds and Stoke. A special qualification event for Speedy employees will take place in Haydock on May 4. Speedy enlisted the help of 2008 world champion Mark Webster to offer expert advice to the Cardiff entrants and he was again impressed.“The atmosphere here in Cardiff was out of this world. The quality of darts on show was very high.

It was a special way to mark the last of the Speedy qualifiers.“If these players reproduce the standards they showed in Cardiff I’m sure they do themselves and Speedy Services proud come June 7 in Bolton.” Speedy’s group marketing director Steve McIntyre said: “The standard of darts never ceases to amaze us, with the players again showing how strong the sport really is.“We are really hoping for one or two upsets at the UK Open, and there’s certainly no reason why they can’t come from Cardiff.”
