How to Use a Grass Trimmer - Correctly and Safely

How to use a grass strimmer: Could the edges of your lawn do with tidying up or have you got a bit of rough undergrowth you want to get rid of? You could probably do with one of these.

This is a grass trimmer, and you can hire them from Speedy, the UK’s number one hire company.

A couple of good things to remember when hiring from Speedy, all our hire equipment is checked, tested, cleaned and serviced before every hire and will come ready to go. You’ll also notice a folder attached to your product, these are the safety and operating instructions, please make sure you read these before you begin your job.

Before you use the grass trimmer it’s really important that you wear the correct PPE: Safety boots, gloves, eye and face protection are essential. We’d also recommend that hearing protection is worn when using this petrol-powered equipment.

Any PPE you do require, can be purchased from Speedy.

This grass trimmer is easy to use, perfectly balanced and ideal for trimming the edges of any lawn. It can also be used to trim down larger areas of grass where a lawnmower may not be able to access.

This trimmer runs on normal unleaded petrol and filling it up can be done by removing the cap here and filling up the tank.

After use, the engine can get really hot, so if you need to refuel, you should allow the engine to cool down, as refuelling when the engine’s hot can be really dangerous.

There are three control buttons on the shaft of the trimmer. This one is the on-off switch. The large trigger here is the throttle which is used to get the line head spinning whilst the top trigger is the safety switch. This has to be depressed in order to operate the throttle.

Step 1:

Starting the grass trimmer is really straight forward. To begin, you’ll need to turn the choke into the on position and prime the fuel by pressing this bulb 7 or 8 times.

Step 2:

Now you should place the trimmer on the ground and make sure that the red switch is in the on position. Place your hand on the head to keep it secure, then with your other hand, pull the cord. Don’t worry if it doesn’t start straight away, as it might just take a couple of pulls. Once the trimmer has started, flick the choke-switch into the off-position.

Step 3:

Now with the engine running, you’re ready to trim some grass!

Step 4:

To aid with handling, the trimmer will be supplied with a shoulder harness that simply clips into the bracket on the shaft.

Always point the end of the trimmer at the ground. Never point it at anyone and always keep people, children and animals away from the trimmer when you are using it.

Step 5:

To operate the trimmer, hold it steady using the handle and then with your other hand depress the safety trigger and squeeze the throttle.

Ideally, you should hold the head of grass trimmer just above the ground for perfect trimming. Too low and you could damage the soil and too high isn’t going to give you a good finish.

Step 6:

If the line on the trimmer ever breaks don’t worry – this can happen. This trimmer has an auto line feed function. Simply press the head of the grass trimmer on the ground while it is spinning and this will feed out more line and a small blade in the safety cover will automatically cut it to the right length.

Step 7:

When you’ve finished with the grass trimmer, turning it off can be done by flicking the switch at on the shaft back to the stop position.

If you’ve got more stubborn undergrowth such as brambles and really tough weeds to clear, then Speedy also hire brush cutters. Essentially these are the same as grass trimmers but they will have a cutting blade instead of a cutting line. If you need advice on whether it’s a grass trimmer or brush cutter you need, simply speak to Speedy as we’ll be happy to help.

If you have any issues with any of the products you hire from Speedy, just give your local Service Centre a call, as we are always available to help, and remember to always check the safety and operating guidance before you use any hire product
