Eleven-year old Lydia of New Moston, Manchester, who has cerebral palsy, now has her very own secret garden, thanks to a ‘Helping Hand’ from volunteers at Speedy Services.

Twelve Speedy employees rolled up their sleeves and spent two days transforming the overgrown and inaccessible back yard into a beautiful and tranquil garden for Lydia to enjoy.

As well as volunteering their time, the Newton-le-Willows based company also donated a variety of tools and equipment including a mini-digger and £1,700 of building materials which were used to level the ground and create a decked area for Lydia to practice her walking and read and relax in the sunshine.

The project was organised by UK children’s health charity WellChild as part of their Helping Hands scheme, and was made possible by Speedy’s celebrated One Plan programme; a strategy developed to help Speedy and its customers operate more responsibly, efficiently and sustainably.

Shelley Kemp, Speedy’s Head of Corporate Responsibility (One Plan), said: “At Speedy we actively encourage community and charity engagement as part of our One Plan programme, where employees can take two days per annum as paid leave to get involved with various charitable initiatives.

“Helping out on such a worthwhile project was an absolute pleasure. It’s been a great team building exercise and special thanks go to our three supply chain partner volunteers from Birchwood Price Tools, Collins McHugh and Youngman Group Ltd who helped create this beautiful space.

“The transformation has really brought the neglected garden back to life and we hope Lydia enjoys spending quality time in garden with her family and friends.”

Lee Trunks, WellChild Helping Hands manager, said: “The garden was crying out for some attention and the help from Speedy was central to making Lydia’s dream a reality. These small improvements will have a dramatic and lasting impact on Lydia’s childhood and daily life.”

Speedy is committed to supporting communities with positive social action and this project coincides with the national Business in the Community ‘Give and Gain Day’ on 16th May - a celebration of the power and potential of employee volunteering across the world.
