How to Use Dehumidifiers - Correctly and Safely
If you’ve had a water leak or issues with damp in your house, or maybe you’ve just had your room plastered, getting the moisture out of the walls, ceilings, and floors can be a real challenge.
This is unless you have a dehumidifier, which you can hire from Speedy, the UK’s number-one hire company.
A couple of good things to remember when hiring from Speedy, all our hire equipment is checked, tested, cleaned and serviced before every hire and will come ready to go. You’ll also notice a folder attached to your product, these are safety and operating instructions, please make sure you read these before you begin your job.
Before you use a dehumidifier it’s really important that you wear the correct PPE; safety boots and gloves are essential when handling these units, and any PPE you do require can be purchased from Speedy.

Dehumidifiers can come in all shapes and sizes, but they all do exactly the same thing and are really easy to use. The size of the dehumidifier you need can depend on the size of the room in which it’s being placed.
Any mains-powered equipment you hire from Speedy can come with one of three types of plug:
- a UK standard domestic plug that can be plugged into any household socket
- a yellow 110v plug which will require a transformer
- a blue 240v plug that will require an RCD unit.
Whatever you require, your Speedy service centre will provide you with everything you need to power up your equipment. Or, our checkout system can remind you of any extras you need. And no matter the shape or size of your transformer or RCD unit, plugging it in will be exactly the same, just simply lift the flap and push it in.
Most dehumidifiers come on wheels and are really easy to move around. They will either have an auto pump-out feature which means you don’t have to keep emptying the machine (but will require a hose connection), or a tank which you manually empty.
After you’ve finished using the dehumidifier, you’ll have to ensure it’s completely empty.
This is our cube dehumidifier, and is very popular for domestic use. This dehumidifier uses a hose to automatically pump the extracted moisture from the unit, which is beneficial for continuous running. You’ll need to make sure you attach the hose to the connector here and ensure that the end of the hose is positioned into a drain, sink or some kind of container to catch the water. To turn this unit on or off you simply press this button.
After you’ve finished using the dehumidifier, you’ll have to ensure it’s completely empty. To do this, simply press this button three or four times to eject any remaining water.
A few tips before using a dehumidifier; if you are draining into a container, place some cling film over the top of your container, this will prevent the dehumidifier from recycling water that it has already collected.
The dehumidifiers are set to a default relative humidity setting of fifty percent which is ideal for most buildings. If you have more specific drying requirements then please speak to our Speedy staff who will be happy to guide you.
It’s really important that when you are using a dehumidifier that the room you are using is sealed off and there are no people or animals in the room during the drying process.
If you have any issues with any of the products you hire from Speedy, just give your local Service Centre call as we're always available to help and remember to always check the safety and operating guidance before you use any hire product.
