How to Use a Lawnmower - Correctly and Safely

How to use a lawnmower: Maybe your lawnmower has stopped working? Or you just don’t have the space to store one? Well, that’s ok because you can still cut your grass with this.

This is a lawnmower that you can hire from Speedy, the UK’s number one hire company.

A couple of good things to remember when hiring from Speedy, all our hire equipment is checked, tested, cleaned and serviced before every hire and will all come ready to go. You’ll also notice a folder attached to your hire product, these are safety and operating instructions, please make sure you read these before you begin your job.

Before you use the lawnmower it’s really important that you wear the correct PPE, safety boots and gloves are essential and we’d also recommend that ear protection is worn when using any petrol-powered equipment, and any PPE you do require can be purchased from Speedy.

Speedy Top Tip! Please Watch our How to Use a Lawnmower Video below:

Step 1:

This lawnmower comes with a grass box to collect the cuttings. To remove it you simply lift this flap and lift the grass box off the hooks, you can then take this to your garden bin or compost heap to remove the cut grass.

Step 2:

At the side of the mower you will see a lever, this will allow you to adjust the cutting depth of the mower. There are a number of height settings that range from low to high, you should adjust this based on the length you want your grass to be.

Step 3:

On the handle you will find two bar switches. This switch here is a safety mechanism and has to be compressed in order to start and operate the mower, if you release this bar the mower engine will cut out.

Step 4:

The other bar is for the mower’s self-propelling feature. If you hold this bar down the mower will drive itself forwards, making mowing larger lawns effortless. To disengage the self-propelling feature you simply release the bar. And if you prefer the traditional method of pushing the mower then just ignore this bar.

Step 5:

This lawnmower has a petrol engine that can be filled up with regular unleaded petrol by removing this cap and pouring the petrol in the tank. If you need to refuel the mower in between jobs, you should always allow the engine to cool down first as refuelling when the mower is hot can be really dangerous.

Step 6:

The engine is really easy to start thanks to its automatic choke. When you’re ready to start your job, compress the safety switch on the handle and give the cord a pull. Don’t worry if it doesn’t start straight away as it might take a couple of pulls.

Step 7:

When you’re finished with the mower you should make sure that the grass box has been emptied before you return it.
