How to Wall Mount a TV

Wall mounting your TV helps reduce floor furniture, maximising space and helping create a modern look.

But televisions are heavy, so you need to use the correct technique and fixings to avoid an (expensive) accident.

The method will vary depending on the type of wall. If you’re drilling into brick, this will be able to hold the weight of most modern televisions. If a plasterboard stud wall, however, try to mount the TV to the wooden studs for more security.

You can also mount your TV onto the plasterboard, but you will need to use dedicated wall plugs which can be used to hold a heavy weight.

A step-by-step guide to wall mounting your TV

Any power tool equipment you need can be hired from Speedy, and we also have a range of consumables available to purchase.

What you need:

Televisions are heavy, so ensure you have somebody to help you with this job. Don’t forget to wear PPE either; a dust mask, eye protection, gloves, and work boots are all needed when drilling.

Step 1: Use your multi detector

Your multi-detector will be able to tell you where to avoid drilling, such as around pipes and cables. If drilling a plasterboard wall, you want a detector which can also be used as a stud finder.

This will ensure you only drill in the correct places. Use a pencil to mark where to avoid, or the presence of a wood stud if fixing to plasterboard. Read our guide on how to use a multi-detector for a full walkthrough.

Step 2: Work out where the TV will go

Now you know where you can and can’t drill, work out the desired placement of your TV.

Height-wise, you might want to avoid it being reachable by children or pets. Try sitting on your sofa and seeing where is comfortable; you don’t want to strain your neck to view the TV.

Then work out the exact placement. You don’t want outside or artificial light to hit the TV, either so might need to tilt the TV.

Step 3: Fix the mount to the wall

Once you know where the TV is going, place the bracket on the wall. Use a spirit level to see if it is straight, and once it is, use your pencil to mark the pilot holes.

Drill the holes once marked, and then use a hammer to tap in your wall plug.

Place the bracket over the holes and screw it to the wall. Only fully tighten the screws if the bracket is straight.

Step 4: Attach the bracket to the TV

Lay the television down on a flat surface, first laying down some blankets and towels for protection. There should be mounting holes on the back of your TV, so line them up with the bracket.

Connect any cables now before lifting the TV into place, to make things easier.

Step 5: Lift the TV onto the wall

With someone else’s help, lift the TV and attach the two mounting bracket sections. This will either be with screws or an Allen key.

Your TV should now be ready to use.
