August Bank Holiday DIY Inspiration
The August bank holiday weekend is the final one before the Christmas period. For 2023, it will fall on the 28th of August.
If bank holiday Monday is a day off work for you, you may be looking to do some jobs around the house or garden over the long weekend.
WEEKEND HIRE - 3PM FRIDAY TO 10AM MONDAY
You can hire all the tools you need from Speedy Hire over the long weekend. Book online, or pop into your local Speedy Depot where you will find all the equipment and bundles you need.
As well as power tool hire, we have PPE available to buy, so you can stay safe while carrying out DIY jobs. A mask, eye protection, and gloves are all needed for the below jobs.
Below are 5 job ideas you can get done this August bank holiday weekend, along with all the tools and advice you need from Speedy.
Job 1. Patch up the fence
Winter can bring heavy rain, winds, and very cold temperatures. You want to ensure your garden fence can withstand all of this, to minimise the likelihood of you needing to do it when the bad weather arrives.
First, make any repairs. You will need a hammer and some nails to fix or strengthen strips of wood. A nail gun will come in handy if there is quite a bit to repair.
If the paint has faded in the sun, use a paint sprayer to give it an additional coat. You may still be able to enjoy the garden a bit over September.
Job 2. Paint your rooms
During winter, we will be spending a lot more time indoors. If you’re bored of your décor, now is the time to refresh it.
A paint sprayer will get the job done in no time. Just clear the room and cover any furniture and flooring with a drop sheet. Remember to wear eye protection, a mask, and cover clothing.
You could opt for a darker paint colour if you want a more cosy feel, or go for something bright if you want to contrast the cold, dark nights we are about to get.

Feeling brave? Why not try panelling your room for a completely new look?
Job 3. Clean your carpets
For carpets to dry, you need airflow in the house and slightly warm temperatures. Now is one of the last chances you’ll have to clean your carpets and get them fully dried before winter.
Cleaning your carpet after summer will mean you can get rid of any remaining allergens, such as pollen and pollution from having open windows. This will give you cleaner, fresher air for spending more time indoors.
Job 4. Clean the guttering
Rain, falling autumn leaves, and even nesting birds can cause havoc with our guttering. If gutters don’t work, we risk damp walls, flooded gardens, and even structural damage to our homes.
In anticipation of the bad weather, check they’re all working okay. Clear any debris, and ensure all pipework is fixed to the wall. If you need to make any amendments, a hammer drill will be able to drive screws into your masonry.
You’ll also want to double-check that any outdoor drains are clear, and keep checking every week or so to ensure all water can get away from your garden.
Job 5. New laminate flooring
To get laminate flooring just right, you need to give yourself time. Over a bank holiday, you have all the time you need.
Read our guide on how to lay laminate flooring for everything you need to know. You’re going to have to measure your room, remove the old flooring and put down some underlay, and then give yourself some time to properly work out the pattern.
You will need to hire a jigsaw to cut the laminate boards to size. Start in the left corner of the longest wall in the room. The first board should be a half board, then continue along the row.
Remember to leave a space for expansion along the room. You can either remove your skirting boards or use laminate trim beading to cover the gap eventually.
