Ideas to Transform Your Home in One Weekend

When giving your home a makeover, you’ll encounter a mix of jobs which take ages, and jobs which take moments but finish off a room.

Plastering, sanding, and wallpapering can all take a few days. Little touches can take moments, however, and make a huge impact.

Below is a list of some ideas you can undertake over a weekend which can make a huge difference to your indoors. With weekend tool hire available from Speedy, you can hire all the equipment you need to transform your room in a matter of days.

Any PPE required for the below jobs can be purchased from Speedy, too. You will need eye and breathing protection, as well as work gloves and protective clothing when working with power tools or paint.

1. Refresh your woodwork

White woodwork is traditional. But it can yellow over the years, become scuffed, and get dirty in high-traffic areas. A new lick of bright white can really help.

Sand before painting, or if the previous paint is quite thick and layered, we have a guide on removing old paint from woodwork using a heat gun.

Or, skirting boards in the same colour as your walls not only means an easier paint job and no cutting in but also can make a room look much bigger.

The same applies to doors and frames, which can create a cohesive feel.

2. Swap out your hardware

Door handles don’t have to be boring silver. From colourful handles to something really ornate, both door and cupboard handles can be swapped to something a lot more fun and interesting.

Just remove your existing handles with a screwdriver, and replace them. If you need to adjust the holes, you can use a wood filler to fill the holes, before sanding and drilling new holes.

3. Change your fabrics

Curtains and blinds don’t only block out light and nosy neighbours. They can also transform a room. Instead of neutral colours, patterns and vivid colours can make a huge impact.

SPEEDY TOP TIP: Want to make your room feel taller? Fit your curtain rail just below the ceiling and opt for longer curtains.

Swapping your cushion covers can also make a real difference. Opting for a mix of sizes can help create a cosy feel on your sofa.

New bedding, blankets, and rugs are two other ways to update everything without spending too much.

4. Repaint kitchen cabinetry

Painting your kitchen cabinets can make a huge impact on your kitchen and is more budget-friendly than changing the entire cabinet. If you use a paint sprayer, you can get the job done in just a few days.

Remove the entire door, cover everything in the area, and then spray paint. Try to do this outside so you have plenty of space and airflow.

A light colour can help with the illusion of more space, and a darker colour can create a cosier feel.

5. Retile your splashback

Whether your current splashback isn’t up to the job of making your clean-ups easier, or you’re simply finding it a bit dated, retiling your kitchen splashback is another great way to change up your kitchen.

It is usually a small area, so you don’t have to be a tiling expert. Simply pick your tiles, and use tile adhesive to stick them to the wall, with grout to finish off. Don’t forget to seal around the edges and where your worktop is.

Of course, you have to remove your current splashback using a chisel, sand the wall so it is smooth and flat, and fill in any holes before tiling.

6. Opt for colour

Don’t be afraid to be bold. While neutrals and blacks can give your home a clean feel, colours are a brilliant way to inject some personality.

If your walls are plain white, why not add some colour by painting your woodwork? A colourful door, bannister, or fire surround can make a huge impact and bring other décor together.

You can also remove any doors and spray paint them, before refitting.

For an easier result, opt for colourful cushions and throws on the sofa, or large wall art. Vases, candles, and other ornaments are also easy ways to add colour. Painting your walls in colour is the most dramatic way to transform your space, though.

If you use a paint sprayer, walls can easily be covered in moments, and you can complete a full room in a day as long as you’ve put the prep work in.

7. Be clever with paintwork

If you decide to add colour to your walls, you don’t have to paint an entire wall. Colour blocking can help train the eye towards a certain spot, without making the room feel overwhelming.

An archway or split wall can easily be painted in a few hours using a brush or roller. If painting a half wall or feature wall, a paint sprayer can get the job done in no time.

8. Go for laminate

Carpets can be cleaned, but this isn’t always practical for some busy households.

Instead, laminating floors can mean easier cleaning, a more modern look, and a 21st-century transformation. Laying your own laminate floor can be simple, will save some money with fitting, and will completely change the look of your room.
