Speedy Services is celebrating after its fleet was named one of the safest in the UK at a prestigious national awards ceremony.

The Newton based company was recognised for having ‘The Safest Fleet of the Year’ at the 2014 Fleet News Awards. Now in its 26th year, the awards celebrate the best people, companies and vehicles in the fleet industry.

Judges praised Speedy for its stringent reporting systems and its innovative approach to on-vehicle equipment, specifically noting the hydraulically-operated side step on its trucks which allow drivers to safely exit without being at risk.

The winners were presented with their awards at a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Wednesday 19th March, which was attended by over 1,300 guests.

Mark Woodworth, Speedy’s Logistics Development Manager, said: “Our commitment to health and safety dominates every aspect of our business and our fleet is no exception. We have our own internal training academy, which offers over 250 courses for both internal and external delegates, nearly 50 of which are driver and vehicle focused.

“Speedy takes every step to ensure all its vehicles operate efficiently and are regularly serviced and maintained. We offer a very stringent regime to ensure that our employees and members of the public are safe while out on the road.”

The sponsor and presenter of the award, Roger Williams, Director of Fleet Services at The Automobile Association, said: “Speedy has looked at every element of operating a fleet, from cars to heavy goods vehicles and has developed a pioneering approach to fleet safety – we would like to congratulate the team on their achievements.”

Speedy has also been shortlisted for another prestigious trade award – The Construction News Award 2014 – and the company will find out if it has been crowned the ‘Sustainable Company of the Year’ in July 2014.
